Daniel Muise

About me

Hello! I am Daniel Muise. I am the founder and CEO of Screenlake. Previously, I was a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford's HCI group working with Maneesh Agrawala and the Brown Institute for Media Innovation. I received my PhD in Communication and Data Science from Stanford University, where I was advised by Byron Reeves and Jennifer Pan. Most of my work was affiliated with the Human Screenome Project. I've also worked extensively with Nielsen data (NPM and browser) in collaboration with Microsoft Research, and held research roles at Google/Android, Facebook Central Integrity, and Instagram.

I am interested in understanding how hyper-individualized media interactions can be measured and modeled in aggregate across society. Screenlake is the commercialization of my research interests: a privacy-compliant data engine that measures what everyone in the world is seeing on their smartphones. Some examples of my particular research interests:

  • Market Research: I examine how sentiment toward brands and political concepts proliferates through large human networks, especially as reflected in seemingly personally-isolated online environments like AI chats and text messages.
  • Political Polarization: I like to poke at underlying assumptions regarding personal information diets, as applied to partisan polarization. I'm especially interested in operationalization of time, attention, and engagement with politics through hyper-personalized sources.
  • Public Opinion Data Validity : I'm interested in the mechanics of how public opinion is measured, including digital trace data, social listening, survey fraud, professional survey taking, and how this all informs AI model training.

My peer-reviewed publications have been covered in the New York Times , The Daily Show, Consumer Research, Ars Technica, the Columbia Journalism Review , and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
